Academics
From production of agricultural commodities through
use of food and fiber by consumers, agriculture encompasses
every aspect of the business world.
Participants in the agricultural sector include
processors, wholesalers, retailers, input suppliers, lenders,
and of course farmers. In fact, the
agribusiness sector employs over 20 percent of the labor force
of the United States. Agribusiness and related industries
comprise almost 20 percent of the Gross National Product of
the United States.
Participants in the food and fiber sector
make decisions in an increasingly complex business setting
affected by environmental, consumer and international concerns.
A goal of the program in Agricultural Economics and Business
is to provide students with the skills needed to analyze market
and technological forces influencing the agricultural sector
and to make informed business decisions.
Graduates of the Agricultural Economics and Business
program are employed in all aspects of agribusiness, including
marketing, product manufacturing, finance, natural resource
management and farming. Some graduates decide to pursue advanced
training in graduate school to enhance their careers in industry,
research, or teaching or Extension. Still others use their
knowledge and skills to address problems in nonagricultural
positions.
