Extension and Research Programs
Michael Wilcox’s Extension and research focus is on the factors that impact rural economic development. His primary Extension program seeks to enhance community vitality by strengthening the capacity for new and existing businesses to thrive and grow through community-based initiatives. In addition, Michael co-founded the Sustainable Tennessee Extension program, which integrates the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainability into programming related to entrepreneurship, workforce development, bioenergy, population dynamics and land use. In addition to his primary Extension responsibilities, Michael has focused attention on research projects concerning regionalism, entrepreneurship and rural migration. He has also been involved in numerous international agricultural research/extension projects including tropical tree crops marketing in western Africa and conservation agriculture in southern Africa.
Service is an important component of Michael’s position at the University of Tennessee. For example, in addition to numerous departmental committee positions, Michael is currently serving as: the National Association of Community Development Extension Professionals as President-Elect (2011); Chair-elect of the Southern Rural Development Center’s Technical and Operational Advisory Committee, and member of the Southern Program Leadership Network’s Community Development Committee (Chair, 2009).
